$$G(j\omega)H(j\omega) = X(\omega) + j Y(\omega)$$

  • The five-step template is clear, but step 4 glossing over the ω→∞ endpoint as “usually toward the origin” is where I’d expect trouble, since relative degree and the sign of the leading coefficient decide that limit and can send the locus to infinity instead. Before drawing, check the degree difference between denominator and numerator to confirm the endpoint, and verify the real-axis crossing count matches the number of poles and zeros to the right of that point. That catches most sketching slips early.

    • Thank you for the thoughtful comment. You’re right that “usually toward the origin” was too loose, so I’ve revised the article:

Step 3: Added a note on Type-1 systems (a lone s in the denominator). In these systems the starting point diverges at ω = 0, so the locus begins from infinity along a vertical asymptote.
Step 4: The endpoint as ω→∞ now depends on the relative degree. For n ≥ 1, the locus approaches the origin from the −90°×n direction. For n = 0, it ends at the ratio of the leading coefficients on the real axis. (The locus only goes to infinity for improper transfer functions, which don’t appear in practical loop transfer functions.)
Summary: Added a pre-drawing check: confirm whether there is a lone s in the denominator and what the relative degree is. These two points catch most sketching mistakes.

One clarification: checking the number of poles and zeros to the right of a point is the real-axis rule for root locus plots, not for Nyquist plots. For the Nyquist criterion, the check is the number of encirclements of (−1, j0) compared with the number of open-loop poles in the right half-plane.

Thanks again for helping improve the article!

    • As a note on scope, this article is intended as a practical template for the Nyquist plot problems in the Japanese Electrical Engineer (Denken) Class 2 exam. So I’ve limited the additions to cases that actually appear at that level, such as Type-1 systems and the approach angle to the origin, rather than covering every general case.
